October 25th, 2015 The RUN is 22 out of 23 Weeks

Waist high or better, at least once a week. There
were NO waist high waves this week.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, No Waves this week, Patriots 5-0
face Jets 4-1, and the welcoming of a NEW Flatbread.

I'm always being asked how I rate the "WAIST HIGH" rating. Well, I'm not using a computers or weather modules. I use the naked eye. I look at a wave and can usually call it pretty close. I mean, it ain't rocket science. I look at the face of the wave and make my call. It's always easier when there is a human being on the wave. But then again, if you know humans like I do, you know they come in different sizes.

Some are small, some are tall. Some are heavy and some are light.

So I think after 51 years of being in and around surfing, I can make a good and solid call on wave size. And I use the now accepted wave size scale. Ankle high, thigh high, waist high, chest high, head high, and the overhead scale. Overhead, double overhead, triple overhead and so on and so on.

So I'm pretty sure there were no waist high waves this week. Unless someone can prove differently, this is my call this week. One more call like this and we start at zero again.

I use the two week rule. And they don't have to be consecutive weeks in a row. They just have to be a solid week of below waist high. Any questions? Good let's get on with the dam blog shall we?

Some one help me out here. When did Halloween get to the point of rivaling Christmas for yard decorations. I mean, I can see a pumpkin or two, and some spider or bat hanging off the porch, but the extent that some people go to is mind boggling.

I guess I'm just not into
the Halloween spirit. You have admit though, the displays that are allowed in neighborhoods all over the country are borderline psychotic. There was a house here in Hampton that used to go over the top with a blood curdling show for the kids. I always thought the man to be slightly askew from normal.

And because our kids knew their kids and every other kid in town, we had to go. I would stand off in the street and watch as the children of
Hampton went into this house of horrors. I secretly wished I had a tazer, because I would of used it against this self made monster.

Thank god his kids grew up, and he retired from the Halloween business. I don't think I would take our grandchildren to something like that. But then again, I'm just not into this craze.

So there's a NEW Flatbread in the area. In Georgetown, MA at the Black Swan Country Club. The latest FLATBREAD COMPANY restaurant will be opening their doors soon. This Saturday was the CLAY DAY (Oven Building Day). Hard to believe how many Oven Building days I have witnessed.

I was there for the very first one in Amesbury. That was in 1998. Jay, Johnny, and company (myself included) had embarked on a
voyage that was uncertain in untested waters. The one thing we all knew for sure was...this pizza was the BEST thing any of us had ever tasted. Now 14 restaurants later, that fact has played heavily on all who walk through the doors of The FLATBREAD COMPANY.

Welcome Georgetown FLATBREAD!

I promised you all a rib update. My ribs are still broken, but the pain has become more manageable. I stopped taking pain meds last Sunday. I feel more in control when I'm not on anything. Besides, our drill instructors at Parris Island were always yelling at us that "Pain Is Good People!" So who am I to argue that point?

Today I am meds free. Yay.

My daughter Gabby and her family lost their dog today. Toby was a cute little Beagle who was Gabby's best friend. And he was also Avery's buddy. So it's been a hard day for them all. Our hearts go out to them all. Gabby, Chad, Chad JR, Avery, and Brylee.

All dogs do go to heaven
. RIP Toby.

"Ed's Corner" pic this week is a shot from 2013. It's winter and it's 5-4 weather. This is such a cool shot. You can tell that the surfer in the foreground just kicked out of his wave and he's raising his arms to hoot the next wave. Looks like it was a hollow afternoon. To see more of Ed's pics just hit the archives tab and scroll through the years and see some of Ed's work.

Be sure to pick up the new SFOD movie The COLD COAST
and check out the extra feature of Ed O'Connell's gallery.

Each week I will feature one of Ed's great pics from this blog.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances
The New England Patriots just beat the NY Jets 30-23. The game was close the whole 60 minutes. Poor Brady had 10 drops from receivers who would normally catch the ball. One in particular was number 19. LaFell. I think he had 5 drops alone. Look, I am not a NFL player, nor am I a coach, but if I were getting paid millions of dollars to catch a football, I would be catching footballs. Or I would expect a pay cut. Ridiculous.

Thank God Josh McDaniels, Bill Belechick and Tom Brady remembered that they have Endleman, Amendola, and Gronkowski playing for them. Because once they started going to them, the game turned in our favor. Before that was nothing but a 3 ring circus. I just hope they remember this on Thursday when the Dolphins come to town

.

The Benghazi hearings last week had Hillary on the hot seat for quite a spell. Regardless of how you feel about Benghazi, the bottom line is, 4 Americans died there. And they didn't have to. They had been requesting more security for months leading up to that attack on September 11th, 2012. But Madame Secretary refused to listen.

This look is not very presidential. Four Americans died on your watch Madame Secretary. Four

She said it's not my circus not my monkeys...wait, it was her circus and they were her monkeys Look the one remaining problem I have with the whole deal is, NO ONE was held accountable. How is that possible? Four Americans die and no one gets in trouble?

I will say this about Ms Clinton. She stood her ground, right or wrong, she stood her ground.

What's this? KSM at his place in GITMO. He is so into Halloween. He can't wait for the Trick Or Treaters (fellow prisoners) to come knocking. He's got a little surprise for them. When they knock on the door and say "Trick Or Treat?" he's going to scream back "ALLAH ARKBAR!" And throw as a IED at them. That KSM is such a joker.

Please my friends, enjoy the weekly humiliation of the master mind behind the September 11th, 2001 attacks. The man who was behind the killing of 3,000 innocent civilians. The number two big dog of Al Qeada. Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

* Note to self, must pick up a case of Snickers Bars at Home Depot.

*HAPPY BIRTHDAY Eva Fatello October 28th
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JoEllen Bunton October 29th.
RIP Toby....The kindest and sweetest Beagle on the seacoast.

Please keep my sister Evamarie in your thoughts and prayers
and continue to send positive thoughts to our dear friend Meghan Evans and family, same with surf photographer Andrew Rebeiro and my dear friend Greg Brooks. Also say a prayer for my good friend Robert Gerard. And please continue to pray for local Hampton surfers Terry Morrison and Rick Fiorentini and their families. Please pray for Dave O'Connor. A good man, a great mentor to so many kids, and a wonderful school principal.
*I'm adding a close dear friend of mine. Marine SSGT George Masten. A combat Marine who served in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the purple heart for wounds received in Vietnam in 1967. George is battling cancer. PLEASE say a prayer for him.

Please Support ALL The photographers who contribute to Ralph's Pic Of The Week every week for the last 9 years. **Think about BUYING a HIGH RES Photo from any of the weeks on RPOTW.

My CATCH A WAVE FOR MOLLY. (Click On the Banner below
on this page.) Started on July 26, 2010 ENDED July 26, 2011.
A Wave a day for 365 consecutive days.
Yesterday- November 1986. The Wall.
(Below) The one thing about water shots of empty waves is...they are timeless. Surfers change, boards change, rules change. But the waves are always the same. I mean you can't tell an empty wave from 1951 to 2015.
Timeless empty waves pour through our lives. The next time you're paddling out, stop and look into the vortex of the passing barrel. It's like looking into the past, present, and future.

HURRICANE JOAQUIN

Hurricane Joaquin swept up the eastern Seaboard the first week of October, and gave every surfer from Florida to Nova Scotia some fun sized waves. And...the water temps were amazingly warm. So those of us who call New Hampshire our home, were treated with the same menu. Fun, head high, warm, and hollow surf. The boys and girls were all over this Joaquin swell, like flies on rotting seaweed. The buzz was hi-speed connections. Cell phones, text messaging, IM's, PM's, tweets, and whatever else we use.

The local crew I was with had more than their share. Kody Grondin, Weston Rogers, James Morse, Mike Stanek, Kyle Linseman, Max Fatello, Carter Walsh, Shane Forsley, and a shitload more. The music is by QWILL and Jimi. Check out QWILL at qwillmusic.com Thanks to all the surfers for making this a fun edit. See ya on the next one. Ralph

SUMMER Twenty Fifteen

These are the Summer clips from 2015 here in NH. I will have a video from the MOLLY 2015, and the Wounded Warriors 2015, as well as the good clips from the last hurricane season. They will be coming soon. Meanwhile, this video was really just the last two months. But it features the following locals. Mikey Evans, Kody Grondin, Kevin Grondin, Jesse Gould, Max Fatello, Shayne Forsley, Ryan McGill, Tyler McGill, Hannah Vokey, Julie Jakoboski, James Morse, Jon Kiskinis, Robert Matuely, Gilly Donatelli, Rick Evans, Lars Hamilton, Skip Brunette, Ana Brunette, Elizabeth Ann, Melinda, Tom Hay, Jared Hay, and a whole bunch more. It's 14 minutes long. The surfing is, well, it's locals surfing a local break. Soundtrack is from two of my favorite artists, Nuno and BH. So grab a cup, sit back, and watch the boys and the girls have some summer fun. And look for the next few videos soon. My name is Ralph and I approve this description.
